Dr. Robert S. Cowles III, CEO to Watch 2017 – Georgia award winner, is a passionate physician whose vision has created an expert healthcare team for the Lake Oconee community and beyond. We caught up with him to find out more about his own role as CEO and the clinic he heads up. Cowles Clinic’s newest specialties and technologies continue to bring superior and cutting edge care.

It is the largest and most advanced multi-specialty medical campus in the Lake Oconee region. The clinic is centrally located on Linger Longer Road in Greensboro, providing easy access for patients in Greene, Putnam and Morgan counties and beyond.

Housed in an office cottage style complex, Cowles Clinic offers a broad range of specialties focused on complete health evaluation, early detection, prevention and treatment of disease for all ages. The primary or satellite offices of 36 medical specialties, and over 100 providers are located on the 13-acre campus.

Health care in the region is being transformed through access to advanced medical care and technology on the level of the leading metropolitan medical centres. The firm’s esteemed Dr. Roberts. Cowles III begins the interview by revealing something of the clinic’s background and what areas their dedicated staff specialise in.

“I established Cowles Clinic in 2004 after relocating my Atlanta based urology practice to the lake area. My vision was to meet the healthcare needs of the burgeoning Lake Oconee community by recruiting leading physicians to create an expert medical team. Cowles Clinic’s board certified physicians have trained at some of the most prestigious medical schools including: Emory University, Dartmouth University, Duke University, Harvard University, Yale University, Medical College of Virginia, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University of Florida, Georgetown University, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Johns Hopkins University, M.D. Anderson, National Naval Medical School and many others.

“Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care at Cowles Clinic is staffed by respected oncology practices in the southeast, Atlanta Oncology Associates, and Georgia Cancer Specialists, who together with Cowles Clinic’s physicians create a team approach to treatment. The 11,000-square foot, dedicated centre delivers medical oncology, haematology, radiation oncology, genetic counselling and a full
range of patient wellness services. The facility includes an auditorium for community health education events and continuing medical education.

“With over 36 medical specialties and over 100 providers, the clinic’s specialties include: anaesthesiology, audiology, cardiology, corneal surgery, ophthalmic, dermatology, executive health, gastroenterology, general surgery - laparoscopy & endoscopy, gynaecology, haematology, internal medicine, interventional radiology, mohs surgery, nephrology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pathology, physical therapy, radiation oncology, radiology, radiotherapy, retina, vitreous and macula medicine, sports medicine, urology and laboratory.”

In addition, the clinic has convenient diagnostic care in a state-of-the-art radiology facility, enabling them to deliver MultiSlice Computed Tomography (CT) Scans. Other facilities the clinic provides include:

Physical Rehabilitation Facility – A full-time physical rehabilitation is available in the 2,000-square foot facility, that includes treatment rooms, full cardiovascular weight training equipment and total gym equipment.

Quest Diagnostics, Inc. – Is a state licensed lab providing full services including pathology and cytology.

Executive Health Programme - Meeting the healthcare needs of busy executives regionally, nationally and internationally through customised plus comprehensive evaluations in the retreat setting of Lake Oconee.

Dialysis Center - Providing complete nephrology care.

Community commitment As the major force in healthcare at Lake Oconee, the Cowles Clinic physicians, staff and volunteers are constantly involved in community affairs. Dr. Cowles believes that the best way to serve the community is through quality healthcare delivery, a point he goes on to expand upon in his own words and adds his thoughts on how education contributes to their success plus how they are serving the healthcare needs in the local community.

“This is done by recruiting and retaining physicians with superior credentials. Offering the highest quality of care makes the clinic a magnet, not only for the local area, but also as a national and international referral centre. Proof of this is found in the zip code list of over eight hundred addresses of patients using the clinic.

“Education is another key to our success. We offer CME to physicians and staff at the Cowles Auditorium. This eighty-eightseat facility provides regularly scheduled programmes presented to the community to improve their understanding of healthcare. Many awareness groups such as the American Cancer Society, Prostate and Breast cancer awareness, diabetes, weight loss, nutrition and fitness are just a few examples of people meeting in the auditorium.
“The Cowles Clinic Foundation serves as a not-for-profit vehicle to financially support healthcare needs in the community. It also supports the health fair and barbecue cook off which is enjoyed by over six thousand
people annually. While not only tasting some of the best food in the south, they meet all the practices at the clinic and can view everything from above while riding in the Life Flight helicopter.”

By constantly striving to improve the health of the community, the clinic has been featured in many magazines, newspapers and on television. It has been honoured as Business of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Cowles was named Businessman of the year. All of this demonstrates the need and value of the clinic. Dr. Cowles offers thoughts by telling us more about the largest medical complex in the Lake Oconee Area.

“The Cowles Clinic with its centres of excellence is the largest medical complex in the Lake Oconee Area. The 13-acre 8 building medical campus is located on Linger Longer Road a short distance from the entrance to Reynolds Plantation and the Ritz Carlton at Lake Oconee and a few miles from the Cuscowilla Resort. The campus address, 1000 Cowles Clinic Way, is the
geographic centre for healthcare for Greene, Putnam and Morgan Counties and its ground breaking work." The Cowles Clinic is home for over 60 physicians in 36 specialties, the state licensed Cowles Clinic Laboratory, the Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care. The Executive Health Programme includes a comprehensive physical by a team of specialists and includes the latest breakthrough in genetic testing.

Finally, to provide the best treatments with greater patient access, urologist, Dr. Bob Cowles is now performing Permanent Prostate Seed Implants and High Dose Rate (HDR) prostate implants on site at Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care at Cowles Clinic. These therapies are two of the most effective radiation treatments used in the U. S. for prostate cancer. He concludes the interview by revealing more about this aspect of the firm’s innovation in his own choice words.

Permanent Prostate Seed Implants and High Dose Rate (HDR) procedures were formerly only available in the hospital setting on an inpatient basis. The highest quality of care is delivered in a comfortable, safe environment that is close to home or comfortable accommodations. No hospital admission is required resulting in a more cost effective medical treatment with less stress on patients and their caregivers.”
